A kiosk that fails at nine o’clock turns into a queue at reception. A few checks a day prevent most of it.
When you need this
Your site has one or more self-service kiosks.
| When | Check |
|---|---|
| Start of the day | The screen is on and responds; badge stock is loaded where the kiosk prints; the card reader and the document scanner, where fitted, are clean |
| During the day | Watch for visitors stuck on one screen: it is usually a dirty reader or a damaged document |
| End of the day | Wipe the screen and the document tray; nothing is left in a reader |
| Weekly | Print a test badge where the kiosk prints |
Placing a kiosk
| Consider | Why |
|---|---|
| Sight line from the desk | Someone at reception should see a visitor who is stuck |
| Queue space | Leave room for two or three people to wait without blocking the door |
| Light | A bright window behind the visitor spoils photos and document scans |
| Reach | Readers and the screen must be usable from a wheelchair |
| Power, network and consumables | Plan the cable route, and site the kiosk where staff can reload badge stock without tools |
A visitor who cannot use the kiosk - reach, sight, or an unreadable document - must always be able to check in at reception. Keep reception staffed whenever the kiosk is the main way in.
